RE: Onan 7.5 quiet diesel question

A step up transformer can derive 240 volts out from 120 volts in. However, there will be some loss in terms of total watts.

RE: bedroom LCD TV not working ??

In the settings did you switch it from cable to antenna or vice versa? yes, we did that 1st. We have tried everything, I think that there may be a cut in the ire somewhere??Get a piece of cable long enough, and a double female cable connector. Then connect the input into the front TV to the cable, and the other end to the back TV. If it gets all the cable channels now, then the problem is probably in the wiring. If it doesn't, the problem is probably in the TV. You can also reverse the patch cable and feed the signal from the back into the front TV for a second check.

RE: Retirees - Decision to Retire

Our income now is less than one-third of what we were making before we retired. We don't have pensions, just income from savings and investments, plus I get Social Security - wife is too young. We restructured our whole life by selling big house, second car, etc. etc. and using proceeds to pay off RV loan. Now we live a much more modest lifestyle, and love it.

RE: GPS Error

My Garmin 530 does that all the time. No matter what I set it to...bus, truck...what ever...it will try to run me either into a low overpass or down a road I really can't fit down. BeaveI've read that all the bus, truck, motorcycle setting does is change the vehicle look in the display - it has nothing to do with routing.

RE: Convection oven warps pans

We use the double pans (separate inside/top and outside/bottom crimped at the edge with an air space in between). No problem.

RE: Receiving mail in Canada

When we travelled through Canada on the way to Alaska, we just had our mail held and then forwarded to Tok General Delivery. It only took 2 days for Priority Mail from Texas to Tok. On other trips to Canada, we've had our mail sent to us in care of the place we were staying rather than to a Post Office. We used the reduced price 3-day FedEx service which worked well. However, be advised that some mail (like prescription drugs) won't be allowed at all, and if you are receiving something that has to be processed in customs (like an RV part - I guess anything except just paper mail), the delay may be a couple of weeks or more in transit.

RE: New Dish From Directv

Existing dome antennas will not be able to see the new KA satellites at 99 and 103 (Thought it was 93 and 103) in fact, they can't see them now. Just curious as to why? Is it something about the signal or could the dome be reprogrammed to "see" these signals like they do with the 101? Ka uses higher frequencies than Ku and so needs a different LNB.

RE: Crossing the Border into QC from Vermont

We crossed at the end of I-89 a couple of years ago. It was the most intense border crossing we've ever had. They spent two hours searching the RV. My wife and I were separated and interrogated at length. They took our passports and drivers licenses and did multiple computer searches. Of course, in the end, we were free to go after we put the RV back together. Surprisingly, they didn't even look inside our Saturn - go figure? I should add that they were polite throughout.

RE: Social Security Early----Or Not

The social security payouts favor women over men. The pay scale is based on age, but everyone knows that on average, US women out live men by 7 to 8 years. This means that no matter what age you start drawing social security payments, women will collect more than men. Since most people don't know how long they are going to live, on average, men can maximize their payout by taking social security early, and women can maximize by waiting to start.

RE: Thetford Aria Classic

We switched to the Sealand Concerto. It is electric, but that wasn't a problem. The whole toilet structure is one piece of ceramic. It is large and sturdy and comfortable with the longer bowl. If you don't mind the electric, you might want to take a look.

RE: Anyone know what the "starting" amps of a 15K btu a/c is?

I believe that the actual starting amps are the same as the LRA (Locked Rotor Amps)- which is usually considerable (in the 50-60 amp range). But... this lasts for a fraction of a second, so really isn't a useful rating as far as genset sizing is concerned.Right, but the starting capacitor charges up to provide the extra kick at startup so your generator won't see the starting current unless the compressor stalls. If it stalls, you want the circuit breaker to flip or else the current will burn up the motor windings.

RE: Manual Hydraulic Levelers

---snip----- My system is not the automatic type. It has 4 buttons to lower the levelers, labeled Front, Rear, Left Rear, Right Rear. What is the proper sequence to lower the levelers? Appreciate the advice.Your buttons work as follows: The Front button lowers either a central jack in the front, or both front jacks. If you have two front jacks, the hydraulic lines are connected together. This allows the front to tip left or right without twisting the frame (with the two connected together, if the coach tips left, the left jack is pushed down, the fluid flows to the right jack which goes up. The net effect is that the center of the front stays at the same level. The Rear button opens both left rear and right rear valves at the same time so the both rear jacks extend. Then Left Rear button pushes down only the left rear jack and the Right Rear button pushes down only the right rear jack. To level: Note: If you have air suspension, dump the air first. 1. Press the Front button - both front jacks will start going down - whichever one reaches the ground first will encounter resistance and stop going down at which time the fluid will fill the other front jack until it reaches the ground - then the resistance will become equal and the front will begin to rise up. Raise it at least 3 or 4 inches to allow for left or right leveling without twisting the frame. (If you are really unlevel from left to right, you may need to get a couple of more inches higher). Observe your level measuring devices. If the front is lower than the rear at this point, continue to press the front button until you are level from front to back. 2. Press the Rear button. Since the both valves are open at the same time, the rears will both go down until one side touches first then the other side alone will go down until it touches, and then both rear sides will rise together. When you feel the rear jacks take the weight, stop. 3. Observe your level measuring devices. If the left side is lower than the right, blip the Left Rear button until you show level from left to right (and if the right side is lower than the left, blip the Right Rear button until you show level from left to right). 4. Now check the front to back level again, depending on how much lift it took to get level from side to side, you may have to press the front button to raise the front a little more to regain level from front to back. Note that your jacks have a limited amount of lift available, and if your camp site is quite unlevel, you won't be able to get your coach level. Also note that if you are quite out of level from side to side, you need to raise the front more to prevent twisting the frame.

RE: Do you use a Cheater Box?

We bought one when we were staying for several weeks in Las Vegas. The park pedestals had two 30 amp receptacles and the park charged $5 per day if you used the cheater. The temperatures were over 105 degrees every day, and many people in the park were using the cheater boxes. We used it so that we could run both Air Conditioners full bore at the same time. YMMV

RE: sea to sky and hwy 99

reading the milepost it looks like this road is not for the faint of heart or those who fear heights...any comments from those who have driven..I have no fear of heights (worked as a derrick man on an oil rig), however, we drove the Highway from the ferry landing to Whistler both ways in September/October 2007. The 800 million $CDN construction project is widening the highway from 2 lanes to 4 lanes for the 2010 Winter Olympics. In some areas, the construction was very bad. We scraped off the bottom of our last two right-side storage compartment doors on one of the detours - a sharp narrow down hill and left turn segment. The construction will continue for another year and a half or so. The construction is quite dramatic because they are widening the road in areas where the former two-lane highway barely clung to steep almost vertical rock walls. If we were going this year, we would definitely avoid the construction. YMMV

RE: Anyone purchase a Ford Escape Hybrid? How long did it take?

The Cincinnati Enquirer had an article about this. They said you get a credit on your income taxes (about $2,000, if memory serves), and since Ford makes very few of them they are almost impossible to get. Most of them are sent to New York, LA, or other big city area. None of our local dealers seem to have any in stock. Good luck. "big city area"?? Houston ain't no one horse, one red light little town by no means. Seems like we would qualify!According to this Wikipedia list, houston is #6.

RE: Power Gear Slide

Had a similar problem a few years ago. Power gear had a special replacement bolt to fix it. The replacement bolt had a shaft (unthreaded part) long enough to go all the way through both sides of the outer shaft and then the threads started. With washers in place, there were just enough threads to catch the nut. The point was that standard bolts will have a shaft that goes into the center, but then the threads start before getting out the other side, and the weak spot is at the place where the threads start cutting into the shaft.

RE: School Bus converted going to Canada

Should i be aware of anything in paticular? thanks in advanceIn 2004, we crossed from Montana into British Columbia on US 93. At the crossing, there was a converted school bus parked by the side of the rode. I asked the Canadian border officer about the bus. He told me that they wouldn't allow it to enter Canada. The reason was that they suspected that the people were not likely to drive through Canada to Alaska as they claimed, but would end up squatting in Canada. I think if you can demonstrate lots of financial capability, they wouldn't treat you like they treated those "bus people".

RE: Verizon USB Cards and VZ Access Manager Software on a Mac

I just dumped the Verizon Access Manaager software, and everything seems to work fine. First, I started the Access Manager, then selected "Uninstall" (I don't remember if it was on the VZ Access menu or on the file menu?) Then I selected Apple--->System Preferences--->Network Then I selected Novatel CDMA and set configuration = default, Account name = 1234567890@vzw3g.com, and set the password = vzw (actually, the 1234567890 is the phone number of my USB 720) Then selected Advanced, then PPP, then checked "connect automatically when needed", and unchecked everything else, then hit OK, then Apply. I also disabled all the stuff I'm not using like the Ethernet interface. It works like a charm. Does your Preferred Roaming List (PRL) update automatically? If not, how do you accomplish the updates? TomI don't know yet. However, if I do "About Verizon Card" it tells me the PRL version. If it seems to get out of sync, I'll reload the Verizon Access Manager (I have a disk image loaded on my HD) and let it update the PRL, etc., then uninstall it again.

RE: Fill screw holes

Try Mr. Grip screw hole repair. These are metal mesh with sharp little blades. You stuff them in the hole, and when the screw goes in, it locks into the mesh while it pushes the blades very firmly into the wood. They are available online and at Ace Hardware.
